Hazlett Visits Dallas

Working as an editorial photographer in Dallas, you never know the kind of stories you’ll get to tell. I’ve had the privilege of capturing many talented individuals throughout my career.

One collaboration that I hold dear to my heart is the opportunity I had to photograph the Australian-Swedish artist Hazlett during his visit to Dallas.

My love for music, especially the folk genre, has always influenced my work so when I heard Hazlett’s captivating sound, I knew I had to find an opportunity to photograph him.

After looking him up on Instagram, I found out that he would be opening up for a band in Dallas. I worked up the courage to reach out to him through Instagram, expressed my admiration for his work and my interest in capturing portraits of him.

Much to my delight, Hazlett appreciated my portfolio and agreed to work together. He shared his vision of having his photos taken in black and white, which I immediately recognized as the perfect aesthetic to represent his sound. Over the next week, we discussed the details of the photoshoot, building anticipation for the day we’d finally meet in person.

On the day of the shoot, we met at the iconic SouthSide Ballroom venue in Dallas, where Hazlett would later perform. As we walked around the venue together, capturing shots, we got to know each other on a personal level. Although he is soft-spoken, his passion for music, humble nature, and sense of humor shone through as we chatted between shots. We talked about our shared love for the Netflix TV show, Bridgerton, and folk music. I was inspired by his genuine enthusiasm for his craft. Despite his remarkable talent, Hazlett remained grounded and approachable, making our collaboration feel like a conversation between friends rather than a formal photoshoot.

He shared stories about his experiences as a musician and the inspirations behind some of his songs. His openness and vulnerability were striking, allowing me to better understand his artistic vision. Each story gave a glimpse into the journey that has shaped him as an artist, and I couldn’t help but feel privileged to document a part of his path.

After we wrapped up the shoot and said our farewells, I joined the audience at SouthSide Ballroom to watch Hazlett perform live. The experience was nothing short of magical. He performed with just his voice and guitar, but his voice resonated throughout the venue and touched the hearts of everyone in attendance - it certainly touched mine.

I’m filled with confidence that Hazlett’s talent, authenticity, and dedication to his craft will take him to great heights in his career. I’m honored to have had the opportunity to capture a moment in time for this exceptional artist, and I’m beyond excited to watch his continued growth and success.
